The Performance Engineer will be responsible for analyzing, optimizing, and troubleshooting performance issues in one of the world’s largest social media platforms, handling petabytes of data daily. The role involves profiling and optimizing data processing platforms, improving infrastructure efficiency, and collaborating with Infrastructure Engineering, SRE, and Product teams.

Key Responsibilities

Performance Optimization & Engineering:

  • Develop and enhance profiling and optimization capabilities to maximize infrastructure value.
  • Analyze, debug, and optimize software application performance using Perf, PyPerf, Gprofiler, Java Async Profiler, Dynalog, and similar tools.
  • Evaluate implemented data systems for performance bottlenecks, discrepancies, and inefficiencies.
  • Troubleshoot and optimize data processing pipelines to improve throughput and latency.
  • Provide optimization recommendations for improving system efficiency.

Collaboration & System Integration

  • Work with Infrastructure Engineering, SRE, and Product teams to embed profiling capabilities into production systems.
  • Ensure performance enhancements align with business drivers and analytical use cases.
  • Participate in cross-functional teams to improve observability, monitoring, and reporting.

Code Quality & Documentation

  • Conduct code reviews, define code standards, conventions, and guidelines.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation on solutions, methodologies, and findings.
  • Identify and mitigate risks in performance engineering processes.

Required Qualifications

Technical Skills:

  • 5+ years of experience as a Performance Engineer.
  • Strong proficiency in Python, C++, and Java.
  • Expertise in performance analysis and optimization tools (Perf, PyPerf, Gprofiler, Java Async Profiler, Dynalog, etc.).
  • Understanding of system performance tuning, debugging, and profiling.
  • Experience with queueing services like SQS/Kafka and time-series databases like Clickhouse.
  • Strong object-oriented programming (OOP) skills.

Soft Skills

  • Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Effective oral and written communication.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Passion for streamlining complex processes.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with large, cloud-native multi-tenant platforms at Internet scale.
  • Experience with observability build systems, platforms, and tools.
  • Hands-on experience working with AWS instances and Kubernetes environments.

The pay range that the employer in good faith reasonably expects to pay for this position is $33.75/hour - $52.73/hour. Our benefits include medical, dental, vision and retirement benefits.
